China Blasts Trump's Arctic Push Using Beijing as “Pretext”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning defended her nation's Arctic presence, asserting that "The Arctic region bears on the common interests of the international community, and China's activities in Arctic region are conducive to peace and stability and sustainable development and … international law." She continued, "We disapprove (of the) US taking China or Russia as a pretext in seeking selfish gains."
Mao emphasized that "All countries' right and freedom to carry (out) activities in the region should be fully respected," signaling Beijing's opposition to American encroachment.
The rebuke follows Trump's Sunday declaration that seizing Greenland—a sovereign Danish territory in the strategically vital Arctic—is essential to blocking Russian or Chinese control. Speaking aboard Air Force One during his return from Florida to Washington, the president stated: "If we don't take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I am not going to let that happen ... but one way or the other, we're going to have Greenland."
When media questioned Trump's pursuit of another nation's sovereign land, Mao responded: "State-to-state to relations should be handled in accordance with principles of the UN Charter."
Trump has also claimed "Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland does not want to see Russia or China take over." He framed the acquisition as vital for Greenland's security and prosperity—despite the territory's longstanding rejection of American ownership.
