Japan, UK Agree to Boost Critical Mineral Supply Chains

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed on Saturday on the urgent need for their countries, along with like-minded partners, to work together to reinforce critical mineral supply chains, during talks held in Tokyo.

Takaichi said the two leaders, as enhanced global strategic partners and closely aligned countries on security, confirmed plans to deepen cooperation in areas including cybersecurity, defense and security, economic security, and science and technology.

She added that these efforts would be further advanced to take Japan–UK cooperation to a higher level.

Takaichi also said they agreed to hold “two-plus-two” security talks involving their foreign and defense ministers later this year and to speed up their trilateral initiative with Italy to jointly develop a next-generation fighter jet by 2035.

Starmer said at a joint press conference that both countries are proud trading nations with a shared interest in preserving free and predictable trade, as well as maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific so businesses can succeed amid global uncertainty.

He also wrote on social media that the partnership between London and Tokyo is contributing to growth and security for people in both countries.

During the meeting, Takaichi presented Starmer with Japanese-themed cat gifts intended for the UK prime minister’s residence cat, Larry.

Starmer’s visit to Japan followed a four-day trip to China, where he met President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

Economic relations between Japan and the UK remain strong, with total bilateral trade reaching £33.2 billion, or about $42.2 billion, in the year ending the second quarter of 2025.

Japan and the UK, both constitutional monarchies, established diplomatic relations in 1858.
