China Carries Out Tests of Long March-10 Rocket

(MENAFN) China carried out a safety evaluation of its spacecraft and conducted a low-altitude demonstration flight of the Long March-10 carrier rocket on Wednesday in Hainan province, the China Manned Space Agency confirmed.

The mission marked the inaugural launch of the Long March-10, a vehicle designed to ferry Chinese astronauts to the moon, according to media.

At 11 a.m. local time (0300 GMT), the uncrewed Mengzhou spacecraft lifted off from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center aboard a prototype Long March-10 rocket.

Shortly after departure, the Mengzhou capsule detached from the rocket and later splashed down at its planned ocean recovery site.

The escape test, involving the Mengzhou crew spacecraft, was conducted “to confirm that astronauts could be brought back safely if a problem occurred during launch.”

While a ground-level safety trial had already been completed in June, officials said the latest exercise was specifically designed “to ensure that the crew could escape after liftoff.”
