South Korea's Top Three Broadcasters Launch Lawsuit Against OpenAI
KBS, MBC, and SBS — the country's most-watched television networks — claim OpenAI harvested their proprietary content without consent or compensation, calling on the courts to hold the tech giant "legally accountable for intellectual property infringement."
The broadcasters allege that OpenAI was fully aware of paid licensing frameworks that other media organizations had negotiated for similar content use, yet refused to engage in comparable discussions — instead enforcing what the statement described as a "discriminatory copyright policy."
The lawsuit also carries broader national implications. In their statement, the broadcasters framed the legal action as a matter of South Korea's data sovereignty, arguing that domestic creators are systematically disadvantaged when confronting well-resourced global tech firms. "In a reality where individual domestic creators and copyright holders face difficulties in suing global big tech companies due to litigation costs and the burden of proof," the statement read, the case was filed to ensure that the rights of creators and copyright holders are protected and that fair compensation is provided.
According to media, this marks the first time the three networks have jointly sued a global AI company — a united front that legal observers may interpret as a bellwether for similar actions across the Asia-Pacific region.
OpenAI has faced mounting copyright litigation worldwide, though no immediate response from the company was available at the time of publication.
