China Denounces Civilian Attacks in Gulf Region
During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, "Beijing does not agree with attacks against countries in the Gulf region and condemns non-discriminatory attacks against civilians or non-military targets."
Guo emphasized that "the pressing priority now is to stop military operations at once and prevent the conflict from spreading. The way out of the conflict is to return to dialogue and negotiation as soon as possible and strive for restoration of peace."
He also called for adherence to "abiding by" international law and criticized the US and Israel for striking Iran "in the process" of negotiations, describing it as a "clear violation" of international law.
Highlighting principles of sovereignty, Guo asserted that the independence, security, and territorial integrity of nations "should be respected."
In a recent conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi conveyed that Beijing believes Iran will preserve national and social stability amid the "grave and complex situation," while also addressing legitimate concerns from neighboring countries.
Tensions in the region escalated sharply after Feb. 28, when Israel and the US carried out a joint strike against Iran, resulting in over 1,200 fatalities and around 10,000 injuries. In response, Tehran launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military bases.
