South Korea Sees Double-Digit Growth in Imported Car Sales

(MENAFN) South Korea's imported vehicle market posted a sharp double-digit surge last month, propelled by strong appetite for electric vehicles and premium German brands, according to industry figures released Thursday.

April saw 33,993 imported vehicles change hands in the country — a 58.1 percent jump compared with the same month a year prior — as reported by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association. Cumulative sales for the first four months of 2026 reached 116,113 units, marking a 41.3 percent rise year-on-year.

Tesla topped the foreign brand rankings with 13,190 units sold in April alone. BMW followed with 6,658 units, while Mercedes-Benz posted 4,796 units. BYD recorded 2,023 units, Volvo 1,105 units, and Lexus 1,079 units.

European models dominated the import landscape, accounting for 16,385 units — or 48.2 percent of the total. American, Japanese, and Chinese brands claimed market shares of 40.0, 6.0, and 5.8 percent, respectively.
