The latest news from Asia and the Pacific
Provided by AGPThe criticism came from a spokesperson for China’s defense establishment, who argued that Tokyo’s recent diplomatic outreach—particularly visits by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Australia and Vietnam aimed at strengthening security cooperation—reflects an effort to build exclusive regional alignments.
He said that under the banner of initiatives such as the “free and open Indo-Pacific” and broader security partnerships, Japanese authorities are encouraging bloc-based divisions in the region. “Under the pretexts of the so-called 'free and open Indo-Pacific' and 'security cooperation,' governing authorities in Japan are instigating bloc confrontation and building 'small circles,' ” he said, adding: “This undermines the strategic security and interests of other countries, and serves as an excuse for Japan to break free from the restrictions on its military development, which we firmly oppose."
He also criticized internal discussions in Japan regarding possible revisions to its post-World War II pacifist constitution, describing them as evidence of a shift toward a more assertive military posture. According to his remarks, such developments signal what he characterized as a transition from limited military buildup to more explicit preparedness for conflict.
The spokesperson further warned that what he described as growing “neo-militarism” in Japan could pose risks to regional stability in Asia.
He also referenced historical grievances tied to World War II, noting the anniversary of postwar tribunals and accusing some Japanese political and ideological groups of downplaying wartime actions while glorifying convicted figures, including those associated with the Yasukuni Shrine.
According to reports, China urged Japan to confront its historical legacy honestly and take steps to build trust with neighboring countries and the wider international community.
There was no immediate public response from Tokyo regarding the statements.
The Chinese official also called on other states in the region to avoid forming exclusive alliances or engaging in bloc-based confrontation.
