Japan Commits to Stable China Ties Amid Rising Tensions Over Taiwan
(MENAFN) Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi signaled on Monday that Tokyo remains committed to constructive engagement with Beijing despite a deepening rift between the two neighbors over Taiwan and Japan's sweeping military buildup.
"Japan will continue to uphold its policy of pursuing a mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests with China, a shared commitment with the neighboring nation," Motegi told reporters, according to a news agency.
Takaichi's Taiwan Remarks Triggered the Freeze
The diplomatic chill between Tokyo and Beijing traces back to last November, when Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared that any potential use of force by China against Taiwan — which Beijing regards as a breakaway province — could constitute an existential threat to Japan, potentially triggering the country's right to exercise collective self-defense.
The remarks drew swift and sustained condemnation from Beijing, which has since repeatedly pushed back against Japan's accelerating rearmament agenda.
Japan Breaks With Postwar Defense Doctrine
The tension has only intensified following a landmark policy shift last month, in which Japan dismantled longstanding postwar restrictions on military equipment transfers — effectively opening the door to lethal weapons exports for the first time. The move signals Tokyo's ambition to grow its defense industry and broaden its strategic footprint in the region.
China wasted no time in responding. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun delivered a pointed rebuke on Monday, demanding that Japan "first and foremost address its wrongful rhetoric and action on Taiwan, halt its reckless remilitarization drive, return to the right track of good neighborliness, friendship and peaceful development, and earn trust from its Asian neighbors and the world with concrete actions."
The dueling statements underscore the widening gap between two of Asia's largest economies, with little near-term indication that either side is prepared to substantially alter course.
