Trump Draws Criticism in Japan Over Anime-Inspired AI Post
The controversy began after Trump shared an AI-generated video on June 6 via his Truth Social platform showing himself styled as Naruto Uzumaki, the main character from the widely known manga and anime franchise *Naruto*. The post quickly circulated and triggered criticism in Japan.
According to reports from Jiji Press, many fans of the series expressed anger online, arguing that the character’s image had been used without authorization or respect for the original creators’ rights.
Public criticism also referenced a separate incident earlier in March, when the White House incorporated imagery inspired by the anime *Yu-Gi-Oh!* in content related to US military strikes on Iran, which was posted on the social media platform X.
In response, an official statement from the *Yu-Gi-Oh!* account said that “the original creators and anime staff were not involved in any way, and no permission was given for the use of the intellectual property in question.”
The latest dispute has revived concerns over the use of Japanese pop culture imagery in political communications. A petition titled “Protect Japanese Manga” was launched on Changeon Tuesday, echoing earlier efforts from March that criticized similar uses of anime content.
Organizers said the petition was reactivated after Trump’s Naruto-related post, aiming to raise concerns with rights holders and relevant stakeholders about unauthorized use of intellectual property.
Since its relaunch on June 9, the petition has gathered close to 20,000 signatures, reflecting growing public attention to the issue in Japan and among anime fans worldwide.
