In August 2026, South Africa marks the 70th anniversary of Women's Month under the theme: “Empowered Women Empower The Nation” , while also recognizes the important contributions of its women to social development. In October 2025, China and UN Women co-hosted the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women in Beijing. Leaders and heads of more than 110 countries and international organizations convened in Beijing to deliberate on major initiatives for promoting women's development worldwide. The Meeting is highly consistent with the core spirit championed by South Africa's Women's Month theme emphasizing that the all-round development of women concerns not only individual destinies, but also national development and the shared future for mankind.
In China, the cause of women has always been an integral part of the epic Chinese modernization endeavors. Since its founding in 1921, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has consistently adhered to the fundamental national policy of gender equality and has always placed the work concerning women high on its agenda. China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) for National Economic and Social Development stipulates that the country should guarantee women’s right to equal participation in economic and social development, equal exercise of democratic rights, and equal enjoyment of the fruits of reform and development in accordance with law. China has initiated the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations, and set up the Prize for Girls and Women’s Education in partnership with UNESCO. China has launched “maternal and child health,” “happy campuses,” and other “small and beautiful” public welfare projects. China is actively promoting international exchanges and cooperation on women under Belt and Road cooperation, in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and within other frameworks. President Xi Jinping made the announcement at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women: In the next five years, China will donate another US$10 million to U.N. Women; earmark a quota of US$100 million in China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund for implementing development cooperation projects for women and girls in collaboration with international organizations; launch 1,000 “small and beautiful” livelihood programs with Chinese assistance that take women and girls as priority beneficiaries; invite 50,000 women to China for exchange and training programs; and establish a Global Center for Women’s Capacity Building, which is aimed at conducting capacity building and other development cooperation with relevant countries and international organizations to train more female talent.
China aligns with the prevailing global trends towards peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit, and actively advances the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative. Through close cooperation with other countries, China is helping accelerate the creation of an international environment conducive to women's development and a better world for all.
China actively address global challenges on women’s development, and is committed to fostering broader consensus and taking more concrete actions to protect the progress already achieved in advancing women's rights. Statistics show that globally, over 600 million women and girls are still mired in war and conflict, and around 10 percent of women and girls are trapped in extreme poverty. At the same time, deep-rooted problems such as violence and discrimination still persist, the gender digital divide is widening, and equality between men and women remains a lofty yet arduous task. China supports women in playing an active role in maintaining peace and security, and in addressing challenges including climate change, public health crises, and humanitarian disasters. China has consistently organized training programs on South-South cooperation for climate change response, implementing a gender-balanced enrollment policy. Since 2022, nearly 300 female officials, experts and scholars from developing countries engaged in climate change projects have participated in training programs in China. China addresses women’s needs in international humanitarian assistance. In efforts to alleviate migrant and refugee crises, China has placed high priority on women and children, encouraging women to register as recipients of household assistance supplies and providing special care for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Projects in the Republic of Congo specifically target pregnant and breastfeeding women as beneficiaries, effectively reducing malnutrition rates among women and children.
