MyNavy HR Career Development Symposium connects Sailors with career experts across Japan, Guam
MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The MyNavy HR Career Development Symposium (CDS) concluded a tour across Japan and Guam, August 31.
Navy Personnel Command (NPC) hosted CDS at Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo, Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, and Naval Base Guam to support forward-deployed Sailors with access to MyNavy HR personnel who manage the policies and programs that shape Navy careers.
MyNavy HR representatives traveled thousands of miles from their respective offices to be alongside the Sailors they support. By bringing career experts to the region, Sailors pursued opportunities to address questions face-to-face while giving representatives a firsthand look at the challenges facing personnel serving overseas.
“I have a plan in mind for my family following my tour in Guam, and my detailer laid out the best possible plan that I can move forward with and execute.” said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Hugo Morales, assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Group One Detachment Guam. “That’s pretty much what I want, answers.”
Throughout the symposium, Sailors participated in scheduled events with direct access to the experts in Billet-Based Advancement, detailing, the Professional Apprenticeship Career Track (PACT) program, pay and benefits, education, commissioning programs, and many other resources for Sailors to move beyond simply receiving information to applying it to their individual careers.
“I’m out here with my PACT Sailors to make sure they are getting what they are afforded, qualified for, and what they want,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Charlie Rhodes, assigned to Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell (DDG 85). “I just want to help Sailors, and I’m thankful for CDS. The right people are here, and the right decisions are being made.”
For the CDS team, the conversations also provided context that emails, websites, and policy messages cannot always capture.
“CDS gives us the opportunity to hear directly from Sailors about the career challenges they’re facing across the fleet,” said Master Chief Navy Counselor Jason Caldera, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet career counselor. “That feedback helps identify where programs and policies can better support Sailors while meeting the needs of the Navy.”
Those conversations become particularly important for Sailors serving overseas. Distance, operational schedules, and time-zone differences can make routine career communication more difficult, and CDS closed the distance and brought MyNavy HR experts to the waterfront.
From Sasebo to Yokosuka and Guam, CDS demonstrated that career development is more effective when Sailors can talk face to face with the people responsible for the programs that affect the fleet.
