Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles Launches School Taekwondo Education Program

Starting August 26, 10-week program to reach roughly 500 students at 5 LA-area elementary and middle schools

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (Director Haedon Lee) will run the '2026 Taekwondo Education Program' for about 500 students at five elementary and middle schools in the Los Angeles area over a 10-week period beginning Wednesday, August 26.

The program is designed to let American students experience taekwondo, Korea's signature traditional martial art and sport, firsthand — building physical fitness while learning the discipline's core values of courtesy, respect, self-control and teamwork. The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles has continuously run taekwondo education programs for students at LA-area schools since 2010, using taekwondo to promote Korean culture.

In this year's sessions, students will learn taekwondo's basic movements, poomsae (forms), breathing and training methods, while naturally absorbing the discipline's educational values — courtesy, respect, self-control and cooperation — through practice. To support this, the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles will dispatch taekwondo instructors to each school and provide participating students with basic training gear, including uniforms and belts.

In particular, this year, after the 10-week program concludes, top-performing students from each school will compete in the '2026 Taekwondo Contest,' to be held December 5 (Saturday) at the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles. Selected students from all five participating schools will showcase the skills they have honed and share each school's achievements, boosting participants' sense of accomplishment and motivation. Participating students and their families will also be able to experience a range of Korean culture — including hanbok (traditional dress), Korean arts and crafts etc. — through additional programs offered at the center.

Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles Director Haedon Lee said, “Taekwondo is more than a sport for physical training — it is a unique Korean cultural heritage through which one can naturally learn courtesy, respect, self-control and teamwork.” He added, “I hope this program will provide a meaningful time for students to experience Korean culture directly through taekwondo and grow in both body and mind.”

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles plans to continue expanding opportunities for local American students to directly experience and understand Korean culture through taekwondo and a range of other Korean cultural programs. /END/
