UM rector leads delegation to Malaysia and signs agreements to deepen ASEAN partnerships
MACAU, September 7 - Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), led a delegation to Malaysia. During the visit, the delegation attended a reception hosted by the Macao SAR government, participated in an education fair, signed multiple cooperation agreements, and visited several leading universities in the country. These activities aim to further expand UM’s partnership network in ASEAN, support the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, and advance the university’s internationalisation.
Song said that UM is committed to expanding its global cooperation network and strengthening exchanges and collaboration with higher education institutions around the world. He emphasised that Malaysia is not only an important source of international students for UM, but also a key partner in the university’s efforts to deepen cooperation with ASEAN. Song added that the visit further strengthened UM’s ties with Malaysian universities and enabled more students in Malaysia to learn about the university’s distinctive educational model and academic strengths, thereby attracting outstanding students to pursue further studies in Macao.
At a reception hosted by the Macao SAR government in Kuala Lumpur, UM and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) signed a student exchange agreement. In the presence of Sam Hou Fai, chief executive of the Macao SAR, Song and Benjamin Colin Cosh, provost of UTP, signed the agreement, under which UM and UTP will further promote student exchanges and cooperation in talent development. UM also signed cooperation agreements with another partner to foster industry-academia collaboration and facilitate the commercialisation of research and innovation outcomes.
UM also participated in an education fair in Malaysia coordinated by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR government. During the event, UM and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) signed a memorandum of understanding. In the presence of Sam, Song and Choong Chee Keong, vice president of UTAR, signed the memorandum to strengthen cooperation between the two universities in areas such as student exchanges and academic collaboration.
At the education fair, Wang Chunming, director of UM’s Global Affairs Office, introduced UM’s academic programmes, international faculty, and study opportunities. UM also set up a booth at the event to provide detailed information about its academic offerings and campus life. The event attracted nearly 1,000 local students, teachers, and parents, many of whom showed keen interest in UM.
In addition, the UM delegation visited two leading public research universities in Malaysia. At Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the delegation was received by Fariza Md Sham, deputy vice-chancellor for academic and international affairs. The two sides exchanged views on student development and academic exchanges. Building on their existing cooperation in residential college exchanges, UM and UKM agreed to strengthen exchanges among students and faculty, promote student exchange programmes, and explore opportunities for research collaboration.
At Universiti Putra Malaysia, the delegation was received by Zamberi Sekawi, deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation. The two sides exchanged views on cooperation in medicine and life sciences, academic resource sharing, and postgraduate education, with a view to promoting student exchanges and joint research projects.
The UM delegation also included Shen Hanming, interim associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
